Animal Welfare
The Animal Welfare Audit Program (AWAP) is a national program cooperatively developed with the National Council of Chain Restaurants (NCCR), the Food Marketing Institute (FMI), and the producer community. AWAP is designed to provide objective data regarding animal welfare at livestock production and slaughter facilities. Burger King, Jack in the Box, and McDonald’s are only a few of the major restaurants and food retailers that participate in the AWAP audit program for their suppliers.

AWAP is a totally voluntary program. The audit tools are generally based on voluntary guidelines developed by the industry. Facilities desiring an AWAP audit will request an audit. The completed, confidential, audit request form will be made available to trained and certified AWAP auditors. Certified AWAP auditors can then bid on a particular audit. After the seven-day bidding process is completed the audited facility will choose the certified auditor they want to complete the audit.

NHT has an AWAP-certified auditor available for audit compliance consulting issues.
